about
Blazes (acoustic) is a relatably reminiscent modern homage to traditional campfire folk tales. It takes the listener on a depictive journey through my decade-long history of living with nothing but a backpack, a guitar, and a (sometimes) full tank of gas headed thousands of miles to wherever the next adventure took me. The song invokes the spirits of native folk legends and storytellers long since past in a timeless melodic fingerpicked lullaby that sparks images of starry late night campfires and lost lovers with a refreshing attitude of humility. The lyrics display vivid imagery of a boy becoming a man through his complex questions, dreamlike aspirations, and the love-induced trials of young adulthood. Line by line it weaves a web of honest and conscious thought tied together with a tension-releasing utopian future. It envisions a world where food is grown in harmonious community and future generations are taught through stories and songs to trust the patterns of life, forgive, live vulnerably, and maybe, just maybe pass on what they know to the next in line…
lyrics
Blazes (G, D, Em, C)
i don’t wanna sleep alone
so i’ll pack me another bowl
and stare at the stars once more
wishing they would say something
cuz i want the world to change
but struggle with my own face
don’t wanna be a king
just wanna be
like i was before
i forgot what this was for
and here i am remembering
at least
the ending’s a mystery
it’s best like that for me
could be gone tomorrow
so what will i leave to be seen
a landscape of my dreams
some are dark as nighttime
when the moon
chases past the sun
will all become undone?
and the man behind the curtain
what will he drink?
tea or whiskey neat
with tattoos just like me
stories of the old days
when the last song was never sad
and the firewood was stacked
higher than the chance of getting laid
and the night was getting late
wrapped up in some embrace
i’d have to leave eventually
i know
those times healed me so
just me and the open road
and now i’m on this island
floating past time’s irrelevance
starting to make some sense
of so much and so little
what’s it mean?
to hold and love a queen
the prettiest thing you’ve seen
for reasons long as country roads
did wind her story into mine
am i in tune or on time
could i be a father to a young
star seed yet to come
there’s so much to be done
do i even trust the earth to stabilize
this cancer it’s designed
has nowhere left to hide
and i’m obsessing over everything i do
programming tough to lose
i’m sure to blow a fuse
and how could i encourage some to grow
when i’ve years yet left to go
and i’ve wandered to and fro
ever since i started on this path
one step forward three steps back
hard to believe this is heaven sent
where are all the angels who i feel
when i prepare to kneel
my prayer book is revealed
my faith in our ability to thrive
to forgive and sympathize
with vulnerability in our eyes
growing all our food in harmony
but only what we need
and sharing sea to sea
so that star seed still to come
can have a taste
of an alpine glacial lake
the opulence of grace
and share this knowledge on and on and on
through stories and thru songs
as the fire blazes on and on and on
