about

Penn's sophomore solo record "Experiencing Turbulence" is an experiment into how music can combine political undertones, spontaneous playing patterns, stories, and satirical lyricism to be memorable, catchy, & entertaining, yet remain authentic to who Penn is as an artist. The lyrical stories (often partially-spoken when performed live) serve as the backbone of this album, depicting the alienating struggle of a new musician searching for inspiration, purpose, and enlightenment.

Or something like that. We're all just experiencing a little turbulence...

Been in some places
Didn’t think that I’d leave
I bummed a smoke from a man
With a gun in his teeth
I’ve lived in back alleys
here and abroad
Seen the pros and the cons
Of the Glory of God
Seen the pros and the cons
Of the Glory of God

If I broke an old promise

There’s so many names
And faces long gone
Campfire lit nights
Filled with stories and songs

I’ve been with some girls
Like me most were strange
I’ve dug inside dumpsters
Searching for change
I’ve hitchhiked with strangers
In beat up old cars
I’ve walked miles of beaches
and chased shooting stars
Walked miles of beaches
and chased shooting stars

these tiny lights cause such pain
these misused minds breed burning trains

i spent some time in the shale ya see
with some guys who broke their backs workin for these companies
they dug their holes for the royalties
they lost their homes piece by piece

i spent some time down under ya see
In the sacred land of the aborigines
Whose ancestors lie between the seams
Where the white man finds his twisted dreams

watching the waves cascade onto Hermosa Beach

I spent some time in the Gulf ya see
drowning all my thought in some cheap whiskey
but i calmed myself the spirit balanced me
now I’m here for love and I come in peace

there’s booze to drink n stories to tell
keep on fallin down this well
what it means hell i don’t know

spillin hopes to another crowd
shakin in my bones too loud
only here another round or so

it's dark again like yesterday
she says babe it’ll be ok
just give it time and room to grow

but all my friends are off to jail
somethin wrong on capital hill
time says that’s the way it goes

told a friend I’m headed south
said boy better watch your mouth
they don’t take too kind to long-haired folk

i said that’s fine i guess
went and seen my therapist
she’s a kind n wise old soul

says you gotta gift to share
don’t be worried can’t be scared
it's long past time your tales was told

I traveled far n traveled long
through the madness through the storm
cold tired n all alone

there was girls whose lovin hurt
pitched tents in sand n dirt
empty hearts n empty shows

solo

met a man in Montrose town
said he’d hate to lay me down
in a ditch beside the road

well i been played and taken threats
'tween lines a white n cigarettes
from some the folk i love the most

sleepin bag n ol guitar
some'll say this life is hard
seems its always time to go

come winter I’m headin down
well that’s a fine long while from now
southbound freight through San Antone

Meet a man in an old saloon
rent his downstairs livin room
spend some time all on my own

play downtown to make a dime
seam some words n make em rhyme
hands and body growin old

hitch some rides and ease my mind
close calls with switchblade knives
don’t speak ill bout that black gold

times'll change folks'll learn
bout them rigs n what they burn
but i won’t say i toldja so

tired legs eyes turned to grey
love to go and hate to stay
it's time to find my way back home
time to find my way back home

there’s booze to drink n stories to tell
keep on fallin down this well
where it leads hell i don’t know

Missed another exit
took the back roads home
closed my eyes a shovel
and I started to grow
I was a mushroom in the clouds and colors were pure and i was looking for the answer and i was so sure
that I’d found them
oh but I never found them

I heard an incantation
from a man i know
left my self behind a couple miles ago
and i know i gotta wrestle, strangle, and tackle my ego
that little trickster's tough and hungry
yes yes i know
i know
i know, i know

now I’m beginning to see
that there's no right no wrong no race and no identity
yeah the purpose of this life just ain't too clear to me
do i slow down and buy a house on some abandoned beach and watch the sea life disappear from my back door

well I’ve been down and out
I know things could be worse
I’ve seen a lotta sunshine
and I've seen a lotta hurt
And I know that’s life to one or maybe two degrees
just tell the big man that you’re harmless
then you’re on your knees
and he holds his sceptor high

we work in tiny boxes
pay off fees and debt
Argue with our best friends on the internet
but if we win the lottery we'll be all set to go
to an island somewhere where nobody will know
where to find you
where will they find you

seems we got distracted
back when things were green
escaping from the clutches of a king and queen
braved the ocean claimed the land
spread our infectious disease
and since then we've ruined nearly all our opportunities of survival
how will our species survive this

cuz when the oceans rise
and everybody on this spaceship dies
at least you’ll have your stocks and suits and paper bills to light fires and life'll get a little easier when you suddenly find
that you had the best all along
yeah you had the best all along

And when you’re crossin over
you’ll begin to see
it just goes on on and on for all eternity
yeah the creatures and the forests and the sun and the sea
gotta find a perfect balance to live in harmony
we all deserve to be here
yeah we all deserve to be here

I burned the bridges that I built
Buncha marks here on my skin
I said I'd stay forever young
Now I don’t take these pills for fun
I ran away and tried to hide
From all the flashbacks in my mind
Staring numbly at the sun

It's all a big video game
Our only savior came and was betrayed
We live in boxes and we take
our stress out on others, can’t catch a break
And though we've studied many brains
There are mysteries we don’t know
There are things our science can’t explain

I never sleep anymore
I drink until I hit the floor
Wake up the next day to see
I’m locked and chained and never will be free
Another hole is being drilled
My friends and family are being killed
It's all a part of this machine
mm mm
It's all a part of this machine
ooh ooh

The world's all gone wrong ya see
There's whiskey in my coffee and my morning tea
Another gig another day
The ones who said they'd be here never came
To beat the devil you gotta stay away
From all the thoughts that are slowly driving you insane
When your world's a salad on a spinning plate

Driving myself back to home
I wish this car would lose control
Don’t think I've got another day
Folksingers and prophets they both seem to say
We're all just matter in the sky
We're all just waiting round to die
Howl at the moon
Hear her reply
mm mm mm
Howl at the moon
Hear her reply
mm mm mm

When I get back I'll write a song
And rip it up it cause it all sounds wrong
And I'll throw my boots on crack a beer
And pack my bags up, disappear
Drive to somewhere new, regress
Tack on a thousand last regrets
Kill the pain with my last cigarette
hey hey hey
Kill the pain with my last cigarette
hey hey hey

The world's all gone wrong ya see
Another gig another day
To beat the devil you gotta stay away

I burned the bridges that I built
Buncha burn marks here on my skin
I said I'd stay forever young
